Spanning the rise of the Atlantic World through the conclusion of the U.S. Civil War, this course will provide a wide-ranging exploration of U.S. history to 1865. Topics will include imperialism and colonization, encounters between Europeans and Native Americans, the emergence of racial slavery, the Revolutionary War, the creation of a written constitution and national government, and developments from the dawn of the republic through the antebellum period. The course will conclude with an exploration of the tensions that led to national fracture and civil war. Core Curriculum: Inquiry in the Social Sciences and Identity, Diversity, and Equity.
